There is much dispute about when our first date actually took place. This is my opinion...
I was asked to chaperone a youth dance in lexington becuase i had just gotten home from a mission, what else did i have to do. Just a couple days before at FHE Ben and I exchanged phone numbers so i decided that I would call and ask if he wanted to come with me. I was still extremely fresh of the mission and was scared to be in public places. I didn't know Ben all that well but from what I did know, i knew he was a nice guy that would be very easy to hang out with. I forgot about the fact that he was a boy and that i had forgotten how to act around boys. The mission does funny things to you. So to my surprise he immediatly said yes, only to find out about a week or so later that he had ditched Michael and Caroline and a couple other people to come. Well Ben is a decided to be gentleman and asked me to dance, let me tell you what happened. I froze completly! My heart about burst out of my chest, i couldn't breath and there was no way i could carry on a conversation while standing that close to him. I felt like a complete idiot. To much relief i later found out that Ben was really nervous becuase i had been really nervous. He acted completly cool to me, i thought he was a pro at handling himself around girls. (i now know better, haha) The rest of the night we just kept talking and talking. but then a meeting that had been taking place somewhere else in the building got out. My Dad was a part of that meeting and being so excited that i had just gotten home from a mission made mention that I was at the dance. So this man walks up, his name escapes me, and introduces himself to me. He then asks, "So what advice did your mission president give you about marriage?" I replied that he had jokingly given me a 3 month deadline saying there's no return missionary that wouldn't want to date me. This man then turns to Ben and says, "Are you a return missioanry?" Ben replied yes. The man proceeded and asked, "are you single?" Ben said yes. The man then turns to me and says, "There you go." Hows that for a first date?

How it all started...
Ashley here, let me tell you how Ben and I became "Ben and Ashley"
My first encounter with the Phenix family happened with Caroline, Bens younger sister. She and my sister Alisa became really good friends shrotly after Caroline and her parents moved to Kentucky (Ben was on his mission at the time). Alisa and I are good friends so while i was at BYU-I she told that I had to meet Caroline becuase she was exactly like me and that I would love her. About a year later I decided to go on a mission and returned home about 2 months before my departure date. Alisa made mention that Carolines brother, Ben, had just gotten home from his mission and I might see him at institute. The funny part is, the very first conversation we ever had went something like this...
We were in a resturant after institute and Ben was sitting across from me. Although we were in the same group of friends, during the first month that I had been home we never spoke to each other. I don't know what Bens reason was but I was scared. So this is how the converstaion went...
B "Don't I know you?"
A "I don't know. You're Ben Phenix right?"
B "yeah"
A "Well, my sister hangs out with your sister all the time."
B "Oh, thats it! You look just like your sister."
A "really, haven't heard that one before."
Precious, right? But thats how it went down.
Ben and I didn't write while I was on my mission but he did come to my farewell talk.
Now the Rest of the story...
I got home on Wed, June 11th and on Monday, June 16th I went to the young single adult FHE, and one of the first people i saw was Ben. This was my first real public outing since being released so I was pretty nervous and didn't really have my "sea legs" but with in 10 minutes after the closing prayer, Ben asked for my phone number. Its up for debate when we had our first date. Some say it was when he chaperoned a youth dance with me on June 21st because although i did ask him as a favor so I wouldn't be alone, he did ditch friends to come. Others agree that its June 28th when we went to 4th street live. Which ever it was, we haven't spent a day apart.
